CP Awareness: Brandi + Austin

No story is the same in the world of cerebral palsy and sometimes a child’s cp journey begins as a result of medical negligence, as in the case of Brandi’s sweet boy, Austin. However, in spite of how his journey began one thing remains certain –  he is thriving and loved deeply by his parents and adorable little sister!

You can read more about Austin’s birth story but for now here is a quick snapshot of their story:

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

1). There is a lot of learning when you become a parent to a child with cerebral palsy. What’s one thing you have learned by having Austin?

Austin has taught me SO MUCH since making me a special needs parent. One thing I have learned is to appreciate the little things. Life is so precious and can be taken away in an instant, and my fighter has taught me to enjoy all the milestones most people would overlook, because it’s something we didn’t think he could ever do.

2). Life wouldn’t be life without its ups and downs? What have been your highs and lows?

Our lows of course would have to be 6 month hospital stay filled with a TON of lows and getting his diagnosis. We were so young, and it definitely took a toll on our relationship. But once we came out of our hole, and came to the realization this was our life now, we learned to make everything a high! Austin is here with us, he is beautiful and he is thriving. He is beginning to stand unassisted. We are doing hippotherapy, and have began using CBD oil, which is already helping tremendously. Raising a child with special needs can be something so special.

3). There are lots of misconceptions about special need parents/children. What’s one thing you wish everyone knew, or something you wish people would stop asking/saying?

My son is NOT sick. Everyone seems to think because he has brain damage he is sick. Cerebral Palsy is not a cold, it is not a disease, it just means his brain doesn’t work like yours or mine. He needs a little extra help to thrive and is capable of great things. He loves music, and when you talk to him his will shine with the BIGGEST smile!

4). There are parents who have a child with a disability who are just starting out on this journey and are scared, feeling hopeless, and don’t know what the future holds. What’s a piece of advice you would share with them?

You can do it. Stay strong, and everything will fall into place. Your child is a warrior, and so are you. Appreciate all this crazy ride has to offer. Share your story, and share it loud.

    1. I love it too! It’s definitely encouraging to hear others especially when they have more experience than I do!
